Chapter Twenty-One

Anna – 1950

Two months after William declared he was looking forward to becoming a father, he came home from work with a big announcement.

“We’re moving to Buffalo,” he said, tossing his hat on the table and heading to the kitchen to make a drink.

Anna had just walked in from a long day at work and stared at him in shock. “We’re what?”

He came out with a full glass and lit up a cigarette. “I quit my job today. I couldn’t stand that idiot Carlton telling me what to do any longer. And Shipman was no help at all. He just kept siding with the jerk. I don’t need to kowtow to those two. I’m smarter than the both of them combined.”

It was late March, and Anna was four months pregnant, although she barely showed. She was always tired, though, and this sudden news hit her hard. She sat on the sofa and stared at William, dumbfounded. How on earth does one quit a meaningful career just because he couldn’t get along with a co-worker? She didn’t dare say that aloud, though.
